It can be argued that all creativity begins in the mind. Everything begins with an idea. No matter how you best express your creativity, everybody wants to have a special place set aside to nurture and develop those ideas into their final form.
It doesn’t take extra square footage to make a creative space all your own. Anywhere can become a studio space for you to create to your heart’s desire. Here are 8 ideas to help you transform any space in your home into a creative oasis.
1. Know what it is you find inspiring.
For some, it is solitude, for others, to be in the midst of a bustling crowd is creatively exhilarating. Whichever end of the spectrum raises the level of your creative barometer, knowing what you find inspiring is the first step towards making a creative oasis truly personal.
2. Embrace your comfort zone.
While people are often advised to step outside their mental comfort zone in order to push creativity to new heights, the same advice does not apply to your physical surroundings. Your creative space should most definitely be comfortable.
3. Where is your favourite colour?
If you’re anything like me, your favourite colour changes with the seasons. When it comes to personalizing your creative space, you have so many options for including your favourite colour. If you decide to dive in and paint an accent wall a gallon of paint is a small investment for a big impact. If you don’t rule the roost, then choose a poster that appeals to you, or make one of your own using images from magazines on poster board. Just make sure you include your favourite colour somewhere in your creative space.
4. Add words and images that inspire you.
If you haven’t already heard of the concept of a ‘Vision Board’ then you’re in for a treat! Many people believe that the things we concentrate on most are the things we attract into our lives. Think of a vision board as a visual pep talk. Your own personal coach to remind you of the goals and dreams that you are steering towards.
5. Include your dream vacation.
Why wait until you ‘get there’ to go there? Search the web for and print photos of your dream destination or vacation and include them as a part of your creative space. On the way to the destination, part of the fun is found in the anticipation! While dreaming in and of itself never accomplishes anything, every plan starts with a dream.
6. The nose knows (aromatherapy).
Whether you have a mystical connection to the mesmerizing flicker of a lit candle, or you prefer scented oils or potpourri in a basket, don’t overlook the power aromatherapy can have when it comes to fostering your creative state.
7. Get low.
Sometimes all it takes is a change of perspective to get your creative juices flowing. If you usually write or sketch while sitting on the couch, try moving your cushions to the floor and see what new ideas develop.
8. Music soothes.
Some people enjoy working in silence, or with the sounds of nature as background. We also have the added privilege of living in paradise so at any given time, we are just a few minutes away from the soothing sounds of the ocean. But whether you’re inspired by Bach or Bon Jovi, remember to include music in your plans for your creative space.
